Wouldn't that depend in part on whether the individuals use the experiences being deep-sixed?

Was there some type of survey conducted before it was decided what features would be added/kept/dumped?

Nope.

If it doesn't have auto-pairing pools, I'm literally completely uninterested.

I do! There WILL be a beta phase and iterations will occur! After working on it for a while, it truly is a better experience!

Is that because your staff

Staff is his last name.  Jon Staff.   Its one family that owns the whole site. Jack1n Staff, Kohai Staff, CrystalMoon Staff, (she's the hippie of the family). Erik Staff, Calamodin Staff, Kansha Staff, (she ran away for a couple of months, but she's back. Life on the streets is NO place for a mod. We found her in a back alley, and brought her to rehab. She's OK now). The youngest brother is Bill Hicks Staff. I think there's even a dog staff.

Do you even know what V3 entails?

I'm dubious as the previews so far emphasize themes. I could care less how my web page looks.

Fix the errors (bugs), and add features (play from a given position). Make it less weird to navigate. Make some of the continual posts from new-comers go away by a better intro (why isn't it a draw, etc.), better organize all the videos and articles.

Amen to that.

...though I believe that much of the update is probably more relevant to the programmers and designers than to the end users.

chess.com is built on 8 year old technology. we cannot keep building on top of an old framework. so the whole thing needs to be re-written as the web has changed so much since we started.

web usability has changed a lot since we started. we also can't cling to old patterns and designs while other sites improve in these areas.

we aren't making these changes for ourselves - we are making these for chess.com and the community. it's a HUGE cost for us to do these things, but we are investing in the future, giving us a stable, new, great platform on which to build and improve over the next 10 years. sure, there will be some painful moments, but there always are for progress.

i'm not just the boss of chess.com, i'm a user too! and i'm tired of using this dated old version :) this upgrade isn't about making things pretty, it's about making things easier to use, more stable, and future-proof.

Good stuff erik. Have you considered pre-moderating comments for new members (e.g. first 10 comments) to deal with the spam problem?

Spiritbro77

Indeed, 8 years ago a lot of people still had old style standard monitors. Now everything is widescreen. Time to get with the 21st century and go WIDE :)

Also, I've been a member of lots of message boards over the years and the ONLY one that disables spell check in browsers is Chess.com. I don't expect you to fix your broken spell check, but how about doing something about the sites disabling browser spell check? Not much to ask....

Scottrf

Perhaps he's helping you out. Adults should know how to spell.

We have that beat...our project is 14 years old.  It is being upgraded from PowerBuilder to C#

Personaly, I like chess.com the way it is, I saw some snapshots of V3 and i couldn't see a single troll under its bridges. (BTW why will it be V3? is this V2? V2 as in WWII german rocket?)

Talonflame_Fan

I would like the see the baba jiji indian guy to stop spamming

ajttja

I'm indifferent, on the one hand, if the spammer left then I would be the one in the spotlight instead (even though i don't like them since they are always set waaay to brightly)

On the other it is entertaining to watch the stupidity of others.

That's not going to happen, for good reasons.

johnmusacha

Also I hope the programmers remember that the users of this site are more nationally and demographically diverse than typical English-language sites.  There could be millions of users here using hardware and internet connections that would be considered obsolete in the United States, Japan, and Europe.

ajttja

yeah my computer is like 4 years old, it isn't even touch screen!
