How to detect a cheater

If you are facing cheaters at 1056 rating, they must be really bad at it.

Turning on an engine doesn't change your rating to super high all at once.  It doesn't even necessarily change it at all until after the game.  There is nothing saying a 1056 can't play a guy rated 900 who decides to cheat.  Or a former 900 who is now 1150 and has been cheating for his last 10 games or so.

That's pretty obvious, it would seem, until you look at the number of "I was beaten by a cheater" threads begun by players who drop pieces left and right in every game.

Anti-cheating measures on chess sites usually involve a sort of computer analysis of your moves to determine statistical likelihoods of finding certain moves,  I think.  I really have no idea how to detect cheating without some sort of program or code, and chess sites usually won't say their exact techniques(which is good).
