In case you're wondering why the number of members jumped...

On our homepage we have a counter of all of our members on Chess.com. Some people might have noticed that over the last 24 hours that number jumped by about 600,000. Why? Because we have imported all of our "Facebook Chess" accounts in preparation for the merger next week. This won't affect your Facebook Chess or Chess.com account yet - we've just created the placeholder member slot for each one.

Almost to 2 million... (actually, we're far past 2 million if you include the 600,000 iGoogle accounts...)

Oh wait, that is a Facebook thing.

Good to see the site continue to expand and prosper.

With those economies of scale, I confidently predict that membership fees will soon be plummeting.

I have two as well! That makes for a looooooooot of sock puppets!

if you have an account there, it will get merged into this account. your games played there will be imported into your account here. your highest rating will be used. you won't notice anything :)

zankfrappa

Who will be the 2,000,000th member and when?  I was expecting this to be in November or December so this is a surprising turn of events!

A good question. Some people (like me) will have different usernames on both sites. Others may have the same username but be two different people. Merging in that case would not be a good idea, obviously.

You have the choice to merge from your FB account

Painterroy

It will be great when they merge so we can 1 rating from both, but how come no live chess there? Why must we play live chess on Facebook thru Chesscube?

Can't really compare the Facebook accounts to accounts here.  Facebook didn't allow the same benefits that paying members here have.  For example, I lost a (won) game on time because I hadn't checked my Facebook for a few days.  Chess.com would have alerted me and/or put me in vacation.  But conversely, many of the Facebook players started games and just promptly forgot about them.

Bottom line: My account here is the only one I consider a serious playing account.

If your seriousness here translates to a higher rating then there will be no problems as it appears the higher rating will be used.

This isn't clear. It's against the rules to have more than one account. What happens if I choose not to merge the two accounts?
