Is chess still mostly played by educated or clever people?

FYI, these numbers that you found are simply fictionalized- made by someone who likely doesn't understand the purpose of IQ tests.

Laypersons believe that IQ score is a measurement of how "smart" a person is (as if the entirety of human intellect could be distilled into a single number).

That isn't really what IQ tests are meant for. They're designed to measure how well a participant may do in the academic system, and/or to help diagnose or identify those with particular intellectual or developmental needs ...

Sir, these figures come from nobody special but from a web site www.chessmadeeasy.com

Please find other figures with the source where it comes from as I did. Those figures do not surprise me, the ELO is correct, why not the IQ?

Ok, it is www.chessmadeeasy.com problem. Did you find other figures regarding correlation between ID and ELO of world champions and hence normal players. @chessblackbelt

DreamscapeHorizons

Nope.

The numbers actually come from a different website:

https://chesseasy.com/top-10-chess-players-with-highest-iqs/

If you'll read the article closely, you'll see the word "estimated" beside each of their supposed Intelligent Quotients.

This is unreliable for two reasons:

1) No methodology or sourcing is given to explain how these estimates were arrived at - nor by whom.

2) A few of the players on this list did have official IQ testing done (Kasparov as an adult, Fischer as a youth) - yet the article declares that no official documentation exists for any of the players.

Therefore, it's safe to conclude that this article is not a reliable source of information.

Sure, I get it - people find it fun to ruminate about how brilliant top chess players may be. But IQ is mostly unrelated to this - if you want to talk about brilliant chess, let's talk brilliant chess. The players on that list have all played some amazing games. But conflating their performances with IQ scores is just muddying the waters ...

Chess rating correlates positively with IQ and negatively with socioeconomic status at birth.

Would love to know what studies show either of these.

Would love to know the name of a known chess player who was born in an affluent family.

Lots of immature, autistic kids play here whose parents have essentially abandoned them to fend for themselves. They can sit in their basement and hurl verbal abuse at people they would be petrified to talk to IRL because these people would pound them into dust.

Flip you.

No, "Flip you"!

Étienne Bacrot comes from an affluent family (his father being an engineer and environmental consultant)

I bet that all the IQ scores in that table are completely made up.

Why would you think that? It seems quite accurate to me.

IQ above let's say 150 is something extremely rare to achieve.

In France, that is affluent class or middle class? Not enough information to make an idea. Anyway, correlation means that exceptions still may exist.

#38 most super GMs don't have jobs right? You need to be rich to not have a job I think

As far as I know, NONE of the GM level chess players – present or past – were born rich. You don't need to be rich to not have a job. There are millions of folks living in this world who are poor and don't have a job.

You are kind of a fun person to talk with. As far as I know – talking about GM level chess players – only the Polgar sisters were homeschooled. And... you don't have to be rich to be homeschooled! In countries with no schools, or in the distant past of your ancestors, everyone was homeschooled and almost anyone was poor and so many were very poor/miserable. All homeschooled!

Not neccesarily. While Magnus Carlsen has a genius IQ (190) Hikaru Nakamura has an average IQ (100-110) and is the number 2 player in the world.

Carlsen has never taken an IQ test. Shoo.

The entire table is made up. Kasparov has a 135 IQ as measured by German magazine Der Spiegel. Fischer's IQ is just an anecdote with no evidence whatsoever. Carlsen has never taken an IQ test...

Your website source is ridiculous.

Really? I thought GM's just homeschooled so they can be chess nerds. I swear Fabi did this and some others

I don't think there's countries without any schools 💀

The problem is that some unlucky individuals can't access them or don't have the funds.
