Regarding Facebook and Paranoia

Society in general has taken a gigantic wrong turn in the past few years. I'm especially paranoid over this big obsession with Farmville on Facebook. Many of my facebook friends invite me to play this stupid game. I see this as far worse than being forced to listen to 70's Disco Music 24/7 for a week! Surprised

Farmville will be available very soon for the new iPhone. Get excited! Tongue out Can you just imagine a sea of humanity fussing with their iPhones doing virtual farming?!

I for one prefer working (farming) in a real garden. It's looking fantastic at this very moment. Smile

Yes, I totally agree the responsibility of the safety of children still living at home rests primarily with the parents.

Slightly more complicated however, when the parents are divorced or otherwise no longer together, even moreso if the Mom (who presently has physical custody) has some sort of friendship going on with the murderer and she doesn't see anything wrong with the kids having contact with druggies, a "former" child molestor, some lady who has a history of discharging shotguns inappropriately, and this murderer guy.

Reb you're totally correct about parental rights, at least in California (where Facebook is based), but to compel a monster like Facebook to do the right thing in situations like this? Pretty much hopeless, without millions of dollars in attorney fees, and even then it's a coin toss. Judges and the justice system in California generally are not known for protecting children. To them, kids are not a priority.

It sounds like you need to compel someone other than Facebook to do the right thing.  It's not the only place your children could be introduced to such unsavory characters, seems to me you should be directing this towards the person doing the introducing.

@Schachgeek (did I get that right, this is your writing isn't it:) I had a spat with Facebook a while back because they were allowing a convicted murder to contact my minor children. I asked Facebook for admin rights to my kids' profiles.  Facebook's response was that these kids (12,13 and 15) have privacy rights that trump parental rights.

As a former reporter, I can tell you I'd be drooling to write this up. And it falls on a lot of beats: tech, family, law/rights.

An organization like Facebook is sensitive to its public profile -- they may become a lot more responsive to you if you get some media coverage of your story. And your story really does seem newsworthy to me.

Facebook is interesting. It's growth is astonishing. During the Iranian elections last year, Facebook was one of the main resources in creating the propaganda of "suppressed opposition" to the eventual elected leaders there. There are some, including myself, that find those who run Facebook and their affiliations more than coincidental. Here is a little video, first shown to me because the girl narrating it, I am told, sounds like me. But I, of course, don't believe I sound like herLaughing

I hope you don't sound like her. She sounds like a robot. If you're interested in how these corporate inter-connections may be affecting our lives, chek out www.theyrule.com. It shows how corporate boards have many of the same members, friends of friends, etc.

LaughingYes, she does sound like a robot! My voice is tiny, but I don't sound like her. I went to your link, but it's not easy to see the corporate board relations you spoke ofUndecided

If we could have a small voice sample as part of our avatar, it would be easier to auralise our opponents.

According to that clip, Facebook allows you to specify Dates of birth. How many have you got?

I guess I should take off my occupation as "007 agent and spy for the KGB/double agent for the CIA" and the list of all my contacts.

I divulged my private information and my computer crashed!  Coincidence?  I think not!  FrownSealed

I was just joking.  Can I please have my computer back?

Perhaps you may scoff, artfizz, but for the Queen of England this is certainly a helpful function.

I hadn't bumped into her on Facebook but it does indicate how upmarket it is becoming. I though she merely Twittered.

Where does "HM" rank in regard to "NM", "IM", "GM", etc.?
