I've talked to a few people in the game chat and it seems everyone's dealing with it today...
LAG, LAG, LAG, LAG

Just played a game on LiveChess, zero lag to report.
I guess it's getting a bit cold for miniskirts.
Well, lag has always been an issue and I think that a 1 0 game here corresponds to a 2 0 game on ICC.
Anyway, in this game my opponent (or me) laged like 5-6 seconds per move. Although both lag indicators were green.

i occasionally have an opponent with bad lag, but usually my games are instantaneous.
here is an interesting chart: http://grab.by/77bF
that basically shows the lag for a ROUND-TRIP signal for all users at a snapshot. basically, depending on time of day (which corresponds to distance from server for majority of players), 60-80% of players have less than 250ms of one-way lag. that is 1/4 of a second.
but you can also see that some players have very poor performance because of how close they are to our servers, and the internet routing near them.
on other sites (like ICC) they also have few players from philippines, india, etc because of the pay-only barrier that keeps a lot of people with bad connections out of their servers.
anyway... "a 1|0 here is more like a 2|0" is hyperbole from a jaded member who loves to jab. the numbers speak for themselves.
My games are often instantaneous, but it is my impression that ICC is faster. Based on the number of moves I can make in a bullet game. And people say that the european chess server is even faster.
I played bullet on ICC only in their one-minute pool. On few occasions (when I was on a poor wireless conenction) I was unable to enter the 1-minute pool because my lag was too high. They also use dynamic lag compensation (at least for bullet games), meaning that, if you lag more than 1 second, you actually lose seconds from your time.
Anyway, I wasn't complaining. But I guess that you're accustomed with the guys who say "wow Erik, your site is the best one around! Everything is excellent!"

conspiracy theory :) I didn't intend to be bitter, it's just how things are from my experience.
OK, not half the speed, but it is slower. On the other server I could never make more than 40-45 moves in a 1 0 game, while here I can make even 70. Very often, I'm not speaking about an odd game played against someone from Russia who has a huge lag.

we credit back for network lag, perhaps they don't. and our premoves take zero time off the clock, they take .1 sec.

Anyway, I've went to playchess and played some bullets. Man, their server is lighting fast. I won't make a comparison with chess.com because you'll get angry again :)

bondocel, for a fair comparison, you will have to take into account the differences between
a) browser based and desktop client based play (Have you ever tried the chess.com live chess desktop client?)
b) servers on your own continent and servers on a different continent. The locations of the server, of your opponent and of yourself play a role already for the minimum signal transmission times just required to overcome the distances.
Is any one experiencing really awful lag today? I've been watching some bullet and playing some 2/2 and have found upwards of 10 seconds of lag on the game clock...
It's so annoying to think that you've got a time advantage building and then see the seconds added back on to the clock. Erik? Staff?? Little Green Gremlins???
