I know what a desktop client is, I don't know if chess.com has such a client or you accept well-known clients like winboard. I'd definitely use one if it's faster than the browser version.
VPN sends a search or whatever you do online to a computer/server to mask it up. So, by having a VPN it slows the internet down by having to make it go further with the advantage of privacy by giving you a new IP.
