Removal of offensive content from a forum

<Kikionfire> has got it right in post #122. Just what I wanted to say - but you put it way better.

Time to lock the thread, admins? :-)

This thread was created because an extremely nasty comment (two of them, actually) featured and was allowed to stay for a day and a half, in another thread, which was thereafter deleted by staff.

Sometimes it's necessary to insist that some especially sour and damaging stuff gets removed. Remove the bad apple before it spoils the whole basket.

Now that it's all in the past, this thread may well be locked, or deleted, as the case might be. I would also change its name if I could help it, into something such as "Hate speech is dealt with swiftly and effectively in chess.com".

Just curious but did it take a day & a half for the staff to remove the offending content from the time you reported it, because my experience of reporting offensive comments is that they're removed quite promptly.

It wasn't all that offensive. It was obviously ironic. The forum participant who spent a huge amount of effort getting it deleted brings an image of Oscar to mind. It's probably 30 years since I read it, but the character in The Tin Drum finds his main talent in life is an ear piercing incessant shreik

kleelof

I think a lot of people didn't find it offensive.

But, in this day and age of religious sensitivity, with so much being said about it, I assume they had to take it down.

Goes to prove the old saying 'Squeeky wheel gets the oil.'.

Look on the bright side guys, we may have prevented wwiii.

<Stephen 33> don't forget that we're talking weekend. Don't forget that we're talking Easter. Don't forget that we're talking 9.5 million users...

Do the little w's and i's mean it would have not been too serious?

ConnorMacleod_151

In a time far far in the future there will be only ONE nation.

Believe me... i've been there

Let's see because I've just needed to report a post in a group I belong to, so it will be interesting to time the response.

Sometimes it's frustrating to wait - but you're dealing with really decent people on the other side, and don't forget that they have their agendas, and aren't running or either yours or mine... :-)

Are we able to ban people on our say so?

If you start a thread as solskytz has done & then block (from within your own profile) another member of the site, then that member can't post in the thread anymore. It's a round-about way of stopping nuisance posts in your own topics.

MrDamonSmith

Or censorship.

solskytz

Trust me on that, MrDamonSmith, there was nothing in his posts worthy of such a highbrow word as "censorship". Don't take my word for it - just read what he'd written.

What does that mean precisely because it sounds a little sinister?

But I completely agree that the staff are decent people & always polite & courteous. Just a shame they can't get some problems fixed a lot quicker - I'm still waiting for some quite serious bugs to be sorted out a year or more after reporting them!

solskytz

Agenda, as in the freedom to decide what to do and when :-)

Here's a good definition. Check out also the origin of the word - pretty instructive actually:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/agenda?s=t

I have my agenda too. It says: go out now, and enjoy some sunlight while it lasts. Here in Belgium it's really precious

p.s. chess.com isn't perfect. We're happy for what exists already and always enjoy seeing improvements.
