OK, why the change to downloading PGNs??

So I see the site has changed from downloading PGNs to e-mailing PGNs. Why the change??

I was totally happy with just D/Ling them to my Desktop, instead of needlessly filling up my e-mail box.

Much worse, even if you D/L only one game, it is now called something totally generic and unhelpful like "chess_com_games". Before it was much more logically named based on the names of the players!

Now I have to go through and laboriously re-name every d**ned PGN after I D/L it!

This is really a step backwards - please bring back the old system, it worked perfectly!!

hendrixx

what are you talking about?

nothing has changed from where i'm sitting.

i just got a pgn file from a game i played 10min ago and it both had our names in the filename and i downloaded it instead of some email crap.

rooperi

I tried, Its mailing mine too....

chessoholicalien

Really?

When I request to D/L a PGN, I get a message:

"Your PGN is being generated. We will email you the PGN when it is complete."

Then it arrives in my inbox.

rigamagician

I believe you can download single games as before, but if you try to download multiple games at once, it sends them by email.

chessoholicalien

Nope, even single games it sends to me by e-mail...

rigamagician

Even if you view the game itself, and click on Get PGN just to the right of the notation?

Yes, that still works. But the multiple files get sent by email

chessoholicalien

Thanks Rigamagician.

Yes that does work, but it's more work than it used to be.

erik

we did this because it requires a LOT of server resources to generate those pgns on the fly - more than 1 second each. i'll see if we can revert it for less than 5 or so.

rooperi

Ah, ok. That sounds reasonable. Is there a way to select all my games, not just the 1st page, for download? Or do I have to go page by page?

rigamagician

It seems to go page by page, doesn't it?

Dozy

There's probably no particular need to download "all your games" rooperi.  They're always available on line if you want them.

rigamagician

Dozy, I think most serious players save copies of all of their games, so that they can analyze them, annotate them, and build an opening repertoire.

Zucan

Yes, I agree with rigamagician here... I have gone down that path of trying to download my currently being played games... I am not patient enough to do it game by game.  I like to analyze my games after they are done... but, it takes a long time to do that.  So, what I *wanted* to do was to put the analysis I am already doing while playing the game in as I am looking at the next move and then I wouldn't have so much analysis to do after the game was done... No sense in going through the process twice...

Now, if there was a way that we could put in our variations and comments into a currently being played game, I would be perfectly happy with that (assuming nobody else can see them...).  As long as I was able to save the game afterwards with all my annotations intact, I would be happy.

On a plus note, once the game is complete, those annotations could become publicly available for all to see... just not while the game was in progress.

So... either give us the ability to download the current games in bulk, or allow us to annotate on the site... That is my two cents worth :-)

Bring back the old system - Paleeaaaasssse  !!

Marshal_Dillon

What do you mean? I just went into an old game and downloaded it and didn't have a problem.
