So I’m new to this app. I was just playing with one opponent and had good advantage. At some point opponent stops playing and his clock continues to count down. I assumed he closed the up and I was just waiting that time will run out and I will be the winner anyways. But then at the end I got a message saying “opponent won by abandonment”. WHAT??? Am I lacking the knowledge of some critical chess rule?

Sounds like a classic "temporary disconnect".  Happens often enough that they wrote a couple of articles about it,  Next time an opponent is taking too much time, hit the refresh page; you may find your opponent has already moved!  Let me find the articles....

I appreciate the response and the links to the resources. I was using the iPhone mobile app though, yet it’s clear that this is precisely what happened.
At this point I’m not sure I want to keep using this app, and I’m certainly going to review this app in the App Store. This is simply unfair.
