Hah, this is funny, I've never tried this.
I've played with a board where all the "pieces" are the same (I don't even know how to describe them, but sort of like all white colored checkers pieces), but I've never played without a board.

my friends and I were going to do this at school but we realized we could literally draw the board on a whiteboard so we did that instead

What's funny is experienced players could chat a bit... for example at the beginning of the game it was unclear if black played d5... if during the game the players were saying things like "I haven't played g6 yet" it might be even more impressive to the non-players who are watching.
i actually noticed he made illegal moves, the knight check kinda seemed off but slipped my head i was just kinda in the moment happy. some of my commenters on youtube were also confused by him playing g6 twice tho considering his pace and how he is 800 USCF it can explain a lot

note the diagram is edited on the illegal moves in order to fill the final position from the video, also yeah this was so much fun, i remember getting inspiration for the idea from a video where hikaru and mvl played a casual skittle game. a couple of days ago we went to the office to play chess and were going to get the board from our counselor but he had a meeting so instead we went to the detention room to get the other set. problem is this set didn't have a board and i was like "ah screw it, lets just do this" and ever since then i really just had some fun doing this lol
