Quality actors

One more observation, as far as the men go, some of the very best actors are NOT leading men but rather character actors. Two of my favorites are Philip Seymore Hoffman and Gary Oldman.   >:[

John Travolta is a good actor??!! Matthew is pretty much unbearable.

Have you seen McConaughey in "Interstellar"? Bascally he whispers throughout the entire movie like he does in his Lincoln commercials. I think he has an acting hangover from The Dallas Buyers Club. When I decided to turn up the volume so I could hear what the hell he was saying, just then the spaceship bearing rocket blasted off and almost blew out the speakers to our stereo system!!! And btw, that movie was at least an hour too long. But that's another story.   >:[

I'm starting to think you are in dinal about your possible attraction to JT.

I thought we were talking about acting? It's not like I say "I don't like war", and then you say, "Oh, you must like war!". Makes no sense

Are you saying you like war? Smile

Aren't we forgetting Kevin Costner and Kneau Reeves???

NOT!!!!

Excuse me I have to go throw up.

I know nothing about acting other than how impressed I am by them, but I think Meryl Streep is maybe my favorite ever. I don't even know why, other than maybe it doesn't seem like she's acting

RonaldJosephCote

You like Meryl Streep because its California law!  Even when she didn't make a movie, Calif penal code says she gets nominatedSmile

It is difficult for women actors to make my lists of quality actors for this very reason; with few exceptions, they hardly ever seem to be really acting or doing something to challenge their skills.

I feel it is MUCH MUCH more difficult for male actors to do diverse roles than it is for female actors.

Women, from a very young age are encouraged, or at least allowed, to examine their emotions and the emotions of those around them. Men, until very recently, have not had this option.

So for a male actor to take on a role that requires them to overcome this 'handicap', is a much more impressive thing.

Of the actors listed by Maxx, Frances MdCormand is the only one that would make my personal list of quality actors. The others are good, but 'good' is easy enough to reach for someone with a little talent. But being a performer of high quality requires much more than just talent.

I think there is something in what you say. But you will be called sexist for saying it because men are not allowed to say such things.

JDA1958

Anthony Hopkins.

I don't get it. Has she won a lot of Oscars? I really would not know. I've loved her ever since The Deer Hunter back in the 70's. Also Sophies Choice

That's OK. Many of my women friends have found some of my opinions somewhat sexist. But they seem to also understand that I am not a sexist.

second paragraph.

As I said, I am a movie buff and I rarely hear actresses call themselves such. They seem to most often refer to themselves as 'actors'.

Personally, I believe making new words to accomodate women is a bit patronizing. If women are expected to reach equality with men in society, making special words for them isn't going to help.

RonaldJosephCote

Oh great!, now your gonna confuse me with Thesbians from Thesbia, and Egalitarians from EgalitaCry

kleelof

Don't worry, when I hear the word 'thesbian', I NEVER think of Thesbia. Wink

Because, deep down inside, he knows the duck was always better.

It ain't easy having your face blown off episode after episode.
