It's just natural behaviour. It's always someone who takes a loss harder than others, after a bad move it's natural to slow down to try saving the game.
And not all like to chat while losing a game...

Maybe that person slowed down because the game just got a lot harder to win, so they're taking more time. Maybe they logged in to Chess.com today and played a move in every game they're winning, but not in the ones they're losing because losing isn't fun.

you could be right in many cases. and i think for normal people this is probably dead on--inititally. but the game is very clearly lost at this point and he is still waiting until he has less than 2 hours left of 3 days waiting, to move. and he is logged in about half the times i check. this is not normal behaviour. it's pretty moronic and dick-ish.
why are people so quick to defend those who are jerks or who act like jerks? is becasue they are jerks as well and want their own behavior justified?
If we all slowed down in games we were losing, all games would move at a snails pace. It is really about bad sportsmanship. In most tournaments, I play the guy who is winning on one game, and boy, does he move fast, then I'm winning the other and he basically refuses to play- that is the essence of what irritates. I have played many people who in the game they won, it was over in a day, in the one they lost they strung it out for a month- thats not on !!!
As regicide13 mentioned, there are other reasons for slowing down than just being a jerk. If you've got a bad position where every mistake may be the end of the game, you've got a good reason to think twice before you make a move. (I'm obviously not talking about completely lost positions without any hope, that's something completely different.) I know from my own games that I often slow down in critical positions to find the best continuation.
i totally get what you're saying, but this is not what i'm talking about.
i am all for people's slowing of their games if they need time to think... but this is not the case in my game. dude is flat out being a dick and he knows it. oh well. the win will come eventually, i just wanted to call this type of person out.

Just wait for his flag to fall.
Isn't that your handle, I like flags?
You should not be so quick to make accusations. Unless of course your opponent has acknowledged that he is stalling and then the appropriate action (since the forums are not the appropriate place to do this) is for you is to click on the "report abuse" button.
Moderator, please lock this thread! It's ridiculous.
have you read anythig i've written in this thread?

I usualy give up to early cause I Hate playing "lost" positions.
But if someone somehow insults me with stupid chat it could be fun to play furhter, and really slow. (I havent done that either- chess is just fun for me) I may think that you could have made some insulting comments.
Some people is easyer to insult than others. (of course he is a dick, but something got him started)
well in this case it seems to be the losing that got him started. but i'm not only talking about this one game. we have all seen it. i'm not sure anything can be done about it but it still sucks.
and shachgeek, i'm not trying to get anyone in trouble or embarrass anyone--i didn't mention the guy's name. nor would i start a thread if i wasn't certain this was happening. of course people slow down for any number of reasons. that's not what i'm talking about. i'm talking about stallers. plain and simple. i think the forums are entirely appropraite for this type of discussion.
I know the feeling, cause I hate facing "idiots" but if you keep wining, they keep theyr strange smile. Why don't you go for the fastest win or the most boring for him?
You guys bending over backwards to justify the stalling are full of it. Maybe it's this, maybe it's that. What are you the ACLU on crack?
Best remedy, if you truly are winning that game, is to finish the job and have a beer. I'm buying. We can invite Obama too but I doubt he will come.
No way! I'm not buying you guys beer!

I do understand your frustration, believe me.
But respectfully I do not agree with your point about the forums. It's not ok to repeatedly refer to someone as a dick. Even if it's true.
What are the chances that the person you refer to reads the forums? Maybe figures out who you are talking about? What if someone else figures it out?

spade a spade but i get what you're saying. part of me hopes he is reading this thread but part of me doesn't cuz a few people defend this behaviour. and in the end i get it. i'm not trying to change the world, but if people know it's not acceptable, maybe it will happen less.
who knows. probably a lost casue
You probably feel the same as I felt in this game :
Get a second Queen!
Yep, it's sad the way some people behave...

Your ridiculous, so many people stall and its obvious.. when your up 2 rooks and your opponent stops moving until the last hour it gets pretty obvious, i thought you.. a 2600 rater would understand, but obviously you dont.
ilikeflags didnt blame anyone, he was being nice, if i were to make this thread i would blame the person straight up.
So shut it, reread the post over a couple times, and if you still dont understand what ilikeflags was trying to say then go cry somewhere else.
I expect my opponents to take some more time to move when they are trying to find a draw in a tough game. It is also obvious to me that some of the people I am playing have dozens of games -- sometimes more than one hundred -- in progress. They may be allocating most of their time to games where they have winning chances. Maybe they should resign some of the other games, but it really doesn't offend me if an opponent wants to slog on in hopes of snatching a draw from the jaws of defeat.
As long as they make their moves on time, and don't abuse vacation, it's okay by me. When you agree to three-days per move, you are agreeing to be patient. It makes no sense to get aggravated if your opponent uses all his allotted time.
As for rating our opponents on sportsmanship, that really is terribly subjective and prone to gross error. We are playing one another at great distance here -- sometimes around the world. We do not know one another and the circumstances that might affect our opponents and their ability to get to the board and make the next move. Even someone who is logged-in all the time may not actually be at his computer. Why make assumptions and negative judgments about other people when the simple alternative is to be patient and focus on your other games?
If your opponent says something rude and insulting, that is one thing. Otherwise, it is just wrong to charge a person with bad sportsmanship.
Let's keep things friendly here.

This is what is wrong with today's society. Actions take a back seat to words. Whatever happened to actions speak louder than words? You guys are too caught up in what people say and not concerned enough with what people actually do. Too subjective my a*$! If you don't know what stalling is when you see it, you really shouldn't be throwing in your two cents. Sit down and have a cookie but don't enter the arena of debate if the concept of stalling is a complicated gray area to you.
Just remember. There was a time when we used to play correspondence chess with post cards. In a normal ICCF APCT event, I'd usually get in about 1 move per 7 to 10 days from the Pacific Rim. It wasn't unusual for games to take 18 months or more.
i'm not sure that anyone is saying they have a problem with long games. i'm not talking about long games being a problem. the original post i made is about people who are playing at a normal pace, or at least and established pace and then begin to slow way down when they start to lose. and i even asked my opponent if something had happened to slow him down and he turned th chat off. this isn't normal slow-age--it's stalling. i'm all for normal pace and established moves per specific amount of time. what i'm not into is a person who slows down to be a dick. i am only talking about that.
