The History of Chess

My name is Sarah. I belong to a group called the Chess History GroupWe are not the biggest group, but I dare say we are one of the most active and among the ones with the steadiest growth (74 members, last count). Our ranks boast some of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic members.

While I would certainly love for everyone to join, I must admit this group is not for everyone.  Only those with an abiding interest in the facinating long ago, in the events and people that formed the game we all love, in understanding the present by delving into the distant and not-so-distant past - only such people, whether they wish to help steer or just enjoy the ride, will find value in joining our lovely group.

For the sake of relevancy, I'm not the founder or administrator of this group. I'm just a contributing member who wishes to spread the word.

As one who has just been enjoying the ride, there is some very fascinating content at the Chess History Group. Perhaps not for everyone, but certainly more interesting than you might think.

Mais oui!

concerning ferlop...

Ferlop is always sweet and always makes perfect sense to me.  I tend to agree (to a degree) with his opinion that groups support separatism (and possibly even  elitism)  and might have unexpectedly negative repercussions.
However, I tend to disagree that vote chess is an answer.  In fact, I personally dislike the entire idea of vote chess.  But - and ferlop would probably concurr - to each his own.

Absurd

I've joined the group, and while I'm intrigued with Chess History, I don't have much to offer on the subject. I may eventually contribute some sidelines about chess and other scholarly topics, such as psychoanalysis, game design, and sociology/anthropology.

Are you suggesting cliques?

batgirl

     Are you suggesting cliques?

Oh, no, of course not. I think ferlop was suggesting that the existence of groups raised the potential for cliques to be formed with the possibility of resulting elitism.  I don't know.  I can see his POV - to some degree that happened, in my opinion, at chessgames.com with the introduction of members' pages or private discussion groups (and it changed significantly the texture of the site - though for better or for worse might be debatable) - but I don't necessarily subscibe to it, at least not to the degree ferlop seems to.

I hope I'm answering what you're asking. I find when responding to someone with Evil in their name, it generally pays to err on the side of caution.
