Everyone is capable of idiocy at some point, on some stage or another. In fact, it's almost mathematical that they will have behaved like idiots at various points in their life. So yes, I have complete faith that they were idiots. It doesn't stop Einstein from being perhaps the greatest man who lived in the 20th century.
