Watching golf is somewhat worse than watching paint dry. Regrettably, this (golf) will fascinate the average mind more than watching even the best chess players, since average chess is beyond the understanding of most of the public.
to you, which is better between golf and chess?

Don't think it will ever be a great spectator sport. But you might get more people playing if there were lower, and therefore more accessible, official titles available for us lower players to shoot for - for example "Expert" (or maybe even "Candidate Expert" and "International Expert"), "Class A", "Class B" etc.
Please arrange this, Demolition_Knight. Let me know when you've done it
ok, thank you, IpswichMatt, I will. I am starting to have doubts, I think I have to ask what the FIDE Association thinks about it.

Obviously I wasn't being serious about asking you to implement this - but I do think it would be good if there were lower, more accessible titles.

It's a bit of a wide question. I mean, they are so different that it is difficult to choose what you prefer. Both offer a completely different kind of enjoyment.
Personally, I play and enjoy both.
If I had to choose one, I would go with chess. The main reason being, as I live in the North East of Scotland, you can only really play golf for part of the year. Even in summer you should pack your waterproofs just in case. Golf is not so fun when you are having a bad round and, to top it off, it is pouring with rain. However, in summer, on a nice day, it is very fulfilling.
Chess can be played all year round, rain sleet or snow, from the comfort of your living room.

As a county chess player (at U120 level ) and a golfer with a (roughly) 35 handicap I would say both are enjoyable, but the reason chess is not as popular as golf is the money. The winner of the British Chess Championship (Gawain Jones) won £5,000 ($7,800), while the winner of the Open (British Open for Americans)(golf) got £8,000,000 ($12,465,000)
. Therefore there is a serious problem gaining enough money from solely chess to survive in the world.
There is also the problem (as IpswichMatt partly outlined) that not enough people can play at a good enough level to gain any money whatsoever.
Therefore I believe the main problem with chess popularity is the funding. If the funding is increased then maybe we will see the increase in popularity follow.

I was under the impression that 28 was the maximum in the UK
Edit: Well, 36 for a woman. How sexist of me.

Golf is a scam, a business conjured out of nothing by a canny Scot. Mark Twain described it as "a walk in the country, ruined".
And to think that he didn't need the internet to do it

@Genghis, I'm not a woman, but according to my club my handicap is 54; however I am continually getting 4s on par 3s and 6s on par 4s.
@astronomer, that is an opinion, and thus you cannot use 'is'; I personally believe that football players' salaries are ridiculously high, but there are people who will say they are perfectly all right and thus that is just my opinion.

I love driving those golf carts, so much fun if you get a fully charged one. Chess is just a puzzle to kill time.
I think about this almost everyday. Chess is lecking alot of money for no good reason, when it is better than golf and could make more money than golf. The FIDE Association does nothing about it. "If it was'nt for Bobby fischer, Chess would be dead." B. Fischer did something crazy and refused to play a Ch. match until the money tripled, and it did and people where willing to watch him play. This is crazy. Someone must do something crazy, almost like fischer and change chess forever. Chess must atleast make money almost/more than golf, Why? Because it improves ur logic, makes ur brain sharper, is harder than golf, and is clearly better than golf. now the question is Whyyyyyyy doe'snt chess make more money just like golf?

Golf is, what I consider, a high-class hobby where you ought to have a lot of disposable money to even start playing. You need to buy your eqipment, you gotta pay the fee for the Golf club, if you can't afford paying for a caddy or a golf cart, you kneel down more often and walk longer distances than you do while cleaning your kitchen.
For chess, you only need a checkered board and a set of chessmen.
To some people chess is boring, d4 is boring, karpov is boring, and to others golf is boring, Tiger Woods is boring, etc. To me, golf and chess are awsome. Both games needs very good performers with a lot of talent.
Screw chess and my idea, chess is very very hard and if atleast 1000 people in this Chess.com site are not intrested then I don't see a point of me bothering myself because only the community is key to making the game a success... I expected atleast quarter of the chess.com community to comment of what they think about this and what do I get? Not even atleast 2 pages ahead. Well u know what, this is the limit of chess - "to me, chess will suffer forever and ever and won't be popular atleast like golf!" ...I give up. ...Thank you, Chess.com community:-)
To me, it's Chess!!! That means chess can be popular, and make more money than ever, and not only would B. Fischer have changed chess forever but also we can play a major role in changing chess forever. I have an idea of making chess popular and would be programmed on tv's and people who be larger than a basketball croud or Football croud and it would be definetly better than golf! Chess.com Community "I need ur help, to make the best cue sport popular, but it is to you the community" ...I can't write my idea right now, but later this month maybe, pls guys share ur thoughts about this, Thank you.
