Schmaltz, YOU still had material, which means that there are still winning chances (albeit microscopic) for the side with K+N. Therefore, a win was awarded on time. Only K+N vs K is declared a draw.
tweak needed
When one side runs out of time, a win is awarded if the opponent can checkmate under worst possible defense. Checkmate with a knight and a king is often possible if there are other pieces on the board. In a major tournament recently, the side that timed out had a king and a pawn and the opponent had a king and a knight. When the person with the pawn claimed the draw, the person with the knight demonstrated that checkmate was possible by underpromoting to a knight and creating the following position.
a knight and a king cannot deliver mate, but if you still have pawns than a mate is possible, like:
it is also possible that you will decide to promote the pawn to a bishop and move yourself into the mating position.
so... it is quite stupid, but those are the rules, try keeping a watch on your time next time...
My opponent had only a knight and king when time ran out, and was given a win instead of a draw. This should be fixed.
