Using Chat for Abuse

Do you find that when you accept a request to chat, it's usually from a player who has beaten you who wants to say abusive things about what a terrible player you are, or what a loser, etc?  That's been my experience, so I no longer accept chat requests.

I accept all chat request and I don’t block users cause I think it’s funny when someone gets mad over a online speed chess game

Hi

NIVEK1000

Indeed---we're here to play chess, not talk...go to a Club Chat room if one wants to Chat...

Pepitodelfuego
I disagree
I like the chat. I like to congratulate my opponent when they played well, win or lose.

If someone requests opening chat, it can be for friendly reasons or unfriendly. In the latter case, two separate people accused me of cheating and one said he had reported me (nothing happened subsequently). I tend to open the chat if requested, to see which type of person it is. Call it curiosity...

Atisbo

On the whole I am relaxed about it - I use a pseudonym, so if someone is abusive it means little - they are not going to be able to follow me home and stab me to death...

It's important to prioritize your own comfort and enjoyment while playing chess.

If I want to socialize playing chess, I do it OTB. If I play chess online, I just want to play chess, I do not want to interact with strangers.

But many want to socialize online, apparently. If you do, you have to accept the price.

My first year on the site I used to have the chat on, and I would try to say complimentary things about my opponent's play when the game was over. Especially if the game was a really tough one, we might discuss it afterwards. However, I began getting rants by sore losers, so I finally just turned it off. Ever notice how chess players seem to have ego issues?

I remember one fellow for whom I could never move fast enough. He would tell me that my last move should have been obvious and I should have made it sooner. While I was considering my moves, he would type in comments like, " Ho Hum ", or " Tick Tock ". When I went on vacation for three days his comments became almost apoplectic. I could only imagine a red faced individual sitting somewhere before a foam-flecked computer screen.

Now, the thing is, I'm not a particularly slow player, and I never abuse vacation time. I use it when outside events require me to take a short break. If I have a lost position I don't stop moving, but I prefer to just resign the game and move on to the next one.

Anyway, when the game was over, a lengthy R+P endgame that ended in a draw, I decided to check out his other games. Turns out I was his only opponent, and had been his only opponent for a long time! No wonder he was bored when it wasn't his move. Did he know that you could play more than one game at a time, or choose a faster time limit with no vacation time? Did he have nothing to do when he wasn't on chess.com? I'll never know.

Huh. I usually like to keep chat on, as most people i have played have been relatively nice, and I do want to believe that the rest are as well. Tho i cant deny there are a few of those sore losers who flip out at you bow and then

GIMMIE_THAT_PAWN

I am new to chess. Do I have to accept a draw? I have been offered a draw 10 times within about thirty seconds after the gameplay turned unexpectedly. He said he was not able to resign and it resulted in using the 'f-word'...

jackcubs

its ok. if you don't have to leave, don't. it will bring up your rating if ur opponent resigns.

"Never chat. It's just asking for trouble."

People who are abusive in chat should be permanently muted. Everybody knows that the forums are the correct media for abuse, you stup*d nob.
