What Happened to Computer Analysis?

Hi,

I've noticed that the analysis done by the computers both on the site -- and especially via the iPhone and iPad apps -- has degraded a lot in quality.

The app analysis engines now suggest really bad ideas like leaving pieces en prise with no discernible benefit - or saying you made an Inaccuracy but the line it suggests has your opponent not recapturing a piece and instead moving a random pawn somewhere.

The website engine used to be 2500-strength plus had commentary built in like "You blew it - you had a win and now the game is even." Then it would suggest a better line.  But I don't see such comments any more and the lines don't seem as solid and good as they used to be even a couple of months ago.

Has anyone else noticed this? What happened? Did the analysis engines get changed out?

Since the analysis runs locally, it is possible your iPhone is running low on memory.

If you choose an example from a game played here, if you paste in the game and the relevant portion of the analysis and provide us the link, we could see if the same analysis is repeated.

For example, one of the ones with pieces hanging for no compensation.

Ok. How do I paste a game? How do I paste the analysis?

Just copy the pgn and then click the little chessboard icon at the top of the text box in the forum (the place you write your comments). It will bring up a box that should be pretty easy for you to figure out (if you are on a computer) and almost impossible if you are on a phone.

This game for example was one you just played. The computer said you played 21 Excellent moves in a row and then your first "Inaccuracy". You missed winning the queen!

I don't think I've ever seen anyone rated 1009 play 21 Excellent moves in a row.  It must be a record or very close to it.

 { (-17.51 → -11.01) Inaccuracy. A better move was 22... Bc5. } ( 22...Bc5 23.Qxc5 Nxc5 24.Kh2 Nd3 25.Bh4 Qxc3 26.Rg1 Qe5+ 27.f4 )

Then after that, you "blundered" left and right to keep your opponent in the game. Fortunately, you were so far ahead it didn't matter. Unfortunately for you, however, you ran out of time.

There's not an easy way to copy and paste the analysis. I have found that you have to copy it to a text editor  like Notepad and then copy and paste only the section you want. The poor little chessboard editor here would choke if you pasted in the entire thing.

You have absolutely just made my day! happy.png. Thanks a million.  The Lord blessed me to work out a Lessons plan that works for me. I've taken tons of Lessons here happy.png Were it not for that, I'm not good enough to stay active (my avatar name comes from having stopped playing chess years ago because my skill level progress simply wasn't worth all that time I was spending studying and playing).

Thanks for the posting instructions. I'll try that, hopefully later today.
