Ok, I admit, this is a selfish post :) I'm just wondering, if you are enjoying Chess.com, have you done anything to help lately? This could include:

- inviting your friends to join chess.com

- adding a widget or badge to your blog or myspace or website

- printing out flyers and passing them out at your local chess club or tournament

- and, of course, signing up for premium membership

I'm working hard for you, and I appreciate everyone who is a part of this community!

Thanks for your support :)

I love this site, and go with Erik's philosophy that it is as good as "we" make it.  Everyone should do something, no matter how small: post on forums, suggest ideas, word of mouth.

Myself:

  • 461 referrels, 3 of which signed up as paying members.
  • I produce a weekly podcast, found under the "fun" tab - available to all!
  • Have a banner on my website
  • Post in forums/blogs/videos/etc
  • Suggest ideas
  • Produce blogs
  • Upload my own research and files to the downloads section

This is a great site.  Playing chess on chess.com is a bonus for me, because there is so much more to do here - including meeting and making friends.  I'd use chess.com everyday whether there was a playing function on here or not.

The site was built to be a site that had all the chess stuff you'd need in one place, which it is becoming (live chess 2 [which is great] will be the jewel).

Keep up the great work Erik and all those who help make this site a better place.

Mike

OK, if you count suggesting ideas and producing blogs, then I do that too.  I have counted 15 referals, only 7 of which are 'direct ones'.  15 people have joined the site because of me, directly or indirectly.  5 Platinum Members (wealybinn, Meadows, Beast_719, Furry_Foot, and LordJones3rd), and 2 Gold Members (brfc, and bluechessmaster).

So:

  • I am a Gold Member myself.
  • 6 'real' referals and 9 others, indirectly
  • I am a BETA tester for the new chess.com app
  • I hand out business cards to my opponents in the many OTB tournaments I go to, and stick up flyers
  • I post blogs
  • I suggest ideas

Sorry Erik but your question left me with a real bad feeling, has chess.com turned into a sect or some sort of a church or even a country?

I ask you this because a question like yours would be something a guru or a priest would ask his or congregation or a President 'what have you done for your country?
The only answer I can come up with is "I PLAY CHESS" here, and if nobody played chess here there would be no chess.com or at least it would be a big empty shelf.
As people pays a fee to play on chess.com,it is a company or a provider and my phone or net provider would never come up with a question like that. This being said I Love" chess.com but please don't take yourselves to serious chess is a game not a religion.

buster eriks just being friendly, i think your taking it a bit seriously. he means like what have we done to improve it, in a way that all of us take part and have a part to contribute, like we're all together. all doing something that helps.

its not a direct unfriendly question. its just a casual question, thats all.

That would be a good woman's shirt design, making the E and the O bigger fonts or different tone,color,value,glitter,neon,.....!

There chEss.cOm.....a new design!

 LOL!

I don't believe chess.com would be a "big empty shelf" without the playing function, because there's too much on here to say that.  The ability to play chess is extra.

On Chess.com there are some amazing articles, videos, forums, blogs, mentor programs, training programs, computer workouts, downloads, podcasts, opening books, explorers, on and on.

If you are coming to chess.com just to play chess then you using a fraction of the sites potential.  Furthermore, if people are paying just to play chess then they are missing an even bigger opportunity.

It might sound strange to say this, but if you've been coming to chess.com for a while (and especially if you are new) explore the site.  Click on everything possible and see what wonderful tools and experts you have at your disposal.  Then go to another chess site - heck go to 5 and add up ALL the stuff they have... it will be less than this one site.

And Erik still wants to make it better, he just wants to make sure we make better with him.

I'm with you, Buster.  Sure did seem like a weird forum topic.  Oh, well, maybe it's my move.

As a business owner, I can appreciate Erik's post. I can't fix a problem in my business if I don't know that a problem exists. Neither can Erik. If my customers are not promoting my business, I want to KNOW that! And so does Erik. Likewise, if my clients ARE promoting my business, it helps me to know exactly what they're doing to promote it so that perhaps I can assist their efforts in some way. Same for Erik. To asnwer Erik's questions...

• I have referred several friends to join this site, though not all of them entered my name as the referring member. I haven't looked recently to see if any of those members have purchased premium memberships. I'm always telling anyone who will listen to me about the site.

• I ocassionally print and hand out flyers to people who show up at our monthly chess club. I need to become more dilligent about this.

• I wear my Chess.com T-shirt just about everywhere including the gym.

• I have a premium membership. I will renew that membership when the time comes.

• How do I add a banner to my Facebook page?? I don't do Myspace.

thanks for all the responses. i didn't mean to offend anyone. i was just curious how people are spreading the word about chess.com and offering a few suggestions.

i didn't mean to suggest that chess.com is a religion or anything - but we are a community. i'm helping you out by creating tools, and you can (if you choose) help out by doing a few things as well. if you're simply looking for a place to play, go to yahoo, right? if you want something better, well you can help build that.

nothing creepy about that i hope!

This is mostly an excellent site. Do not worry, the word will go out

I have added this to my anti-virus forum profile:

So when I have problems with my anti-virus program or simply post something this banner appears under every post submitted.

As said before, this site is excellent and that also means that it tries to get better. In that regard, the major problem I met, and perhaps it is my own problem, is that there is no way to make the look of the analysis board different from the regular online view. The result is that I often believe to be in one when actually I am in the other. I lost quite a few queens in that. Perhaps there is a simple way to program a different look for different functions. What do you think?
