What's in a Theme?

Themes are fairly well defined, but I have an issue with the identification of Themes in Puzzle Rush. For instance, a passed pawn in a game will be a Theme just by existing on the board, it makes little sense to me that the case should automatically be the same in a Puzzle. In the game setting, even if the pawn never promotes it will almost always be a factor in how moves are evaluated and chosen. In a Puzzle, it makes more sense to identify the Themes which actually played into the Solution!
