What's the time, Mr. Wolf?

How would you account for Daylight saving?

RedSoxpawn

Wouldn't it be automatic as it is a computer?

Please see my previous comment regarding cardboard boxes and anyway, some people may choose not to accept the Daylight saving change.

RedSoxpawn

Cardboard boxes still have a timezone and DST change, I suppose that it is up to another person to accept it or not

Artfizz, why would you want to know the time of day where the opponent is playing?  How is it useful?  What do you hope to gain by knowing that?

If I told you, I'd have to kill you! For starters:

1) so I can press home an attack at the point when my oponent is likely to be most fatigued. (This in conjunction with consulting his personal profile to determine from his occupation whether he is a shift worker.)

2) so that I can take full advantage of his lighting conditions. If it is late, he is probably playing under strong, artificial light. If he is playing black, there may be shadows on the board depending on where his tall pieces are. Weather conditions and season may also be factors.

3) so that I can courteously sign off with an appropriate time-of-day comment: good night, good afternoon, good morning, etc.

I hope this answers your question. Good day!

i see clowns... and am encouraged, there is hope yet for chess players.

bowanza

The 3 answers you supplied suggest that there is nothing to be gained, as far as the game itself is concerned, in knowing the time of day.  As for your hopes in subversively gaining advantages, I think you would be better off knowing your opponent's blood pressure and how much sleep they've gotten in the last 24 hours.

Knowing the time zone, etc. could be useful when considering open seek offers or issuing challenges--one move then off to bed is a frequent pain in the butt !!

erispe

It's not hard to figure out what time it is in another country...

what time is it in America?

Evil_Homer

Mid morning to early morning.

The_Pitts

I work the second/third shift, being a baker...so your plan to figure out my sleep/fatige cycle may backfire. as I often play after most of america, brazil, cuba etc. is in bed.

2 questions:

first off, why would you care what time it is locally to someone else?

secondly, why not just look at their flag - that should give you a general feel for where in the world they are.

:)

artfizz

To answer your 2nd point, erik, I would have to learn some geography & time zone association; not a big deal, I grant you. For the U.S., I would have to figure out whether California (say) is east coast or west coast - and look up the appropriate TZ.

As to why I am interested in the 1st place: it's just a point of connection with one's opponent, no different from being aware of their country. It's of no material interest. (It's 6pm here. I have no idea what time {or day!} it is in CA.

lukeyboy_xx

this is just really random why would you want to know the time ina different part of the world

RedSoxpawn

it is 10 in the morning July the 22 in California

artfizz

Thanks, redSoxpawn - that's all I wanted to know.

It seems impossible to convey why knowing something about the player one is playing against would be of interest. Why does chess.com allow meaningful names? Why not just player-1, player-2, etc. Why is the country of the opponent always associated with their name? Why is the information about how long someone has been a member given such prominence?

Where did I put that atlas?

Skakmati

All of this for the time and day? Why not just go to:

http://www.worldtimezone.com/index.php

and all of your questions will be answered! Wink

Also relevant - where are many of the places ? EG Kazan. Djoubti, Wroclav,Tegucigalpa.... just to mention a few of the better known townships. then there is Moscow in Ayrshire Scotland , several Austins in  good old U S of A  together with other immigrant named townhips-Paris, Glasgow, Baltimore, New York, lots of renamed ex colonial locations etc. etc.--are we getting the message ---all this interesting stuff takes time off actual playing  to investigate  so if it was not too difficult for the boffins could not the  time info already  gathered and recorded by the joining process be displayed simply as the Time correction Factor.... after all  is does already notify hours and even minutes left to play before time wipe outs.. the info is there already in system
