The greatest player comes out of his results, not out of the taste of everyone of us. On the ground of results the greatest player of all times is far and away Anatoly KARPOV. More than 160 victories in top tournaments is something that nobody else could even imagine!
Botvinnik was world champion so many times. I don't think he's the best and I can't respond to this question but it would me a shame not mentioning the soviet genius.
