To sum it up in one picture....
I built a chessboard for my grandkids and it stirred my interest.
That beats my story hands down.
Good to hear!
pretend there's a picture of my dad below

Amongst the first reasons for myself, I wanted to know how to play something different besides 1. a4 e5 2. Ra3 Bxa3.
I was 13 and a good friend of mine that was at the time a role model for me and he had a very intellectual father and he challenged me in front of another very smart friend who knew how to play.
Of course I didn't know how to move any piece but I did accept the challenge and he just humiliated me by being mean...so after I decided to go to the library and to read a book about chess and to have my revenge...
No, I never had the chance to play against him again and that is why i still have a chip on my shoulder....
I joined a chess club at my local pub back in 2011. I officially started playing chess when I was 10 during chess club at school in 2003 but it was only casually.
That’s an awesome pic!
Ginger GM is one of my favourite personalities.
Wanted to be better than my friends at everything (soccer, hockey, chess, english, math, debate). At school, some kids were playing 1. a4 1. a5 2. Ra3 2. Ra6 and so on. I always lost to it (I knew how to move the pieces back then) and didn't like that. So I started studying and really getting into chess. I signed up for chess lessons with an FM and started going to some small tournaments. Fast forward now, and I am still on my journey to becoming a master one day (doubt it though...)
I injured myself and took up chess again while I was healing.
