Why Do People Post Pictures of Themselves Here?

Identifying yourself as a WGM on a chess website sort of comes with being very popular... especially in a site overrun by males. There's no doubt you were already OK with being seen by creeps all over the Internet! :D

Not really: women make easier opponents since since men-are-better-than-women.

Many people post their pictures to get attention and for other people think they are cool. That happens because they have low self esteem, and it means these people are insecure. This is the case of many girls, but it happens with guys too.

The ones who don't post their pics for attention, I can only speculate... Only them can answer accuratly, prehaps.

I'm no psychologist but it seems to me that avoiding displaying your photo is more likely to indicate low self esteem and insecurity than displaying it.

You do have a point there. If a person wants to post his photo, but doesn't post it, it can totally mean they are insecure... don'y you agree?

BUT, many people who don't post photos is NOT because of that reason. They don't even want to. They just don't feel the need for it. Is that not a different case?

Stalking is one thing, but the hangups about other people "using" someone's photo are pretty neurotic.  Ever walked around in a public park, down a street, or on a beach?  Ever eaten at a restaurant where a nearby table had a birthday party or some other celebration going on where people were taking photos?  There are photos of you out there that you don't even know about.

So what?

I think it's curious that there are long-term members who choose to use no image for their avatar-- not a photo, or geometric pattern, or flower-- nothing.  Maybe some of our psychology experts can tell us what that indicates about self-esteem.

It's understandable that you'll inevitably be caught somewhere in some photographs outside - but are you the main focus of the picture then? Most likely not, unless you're doing something incredibly... dumb (or extravagant, etc.).

In the context of the Internet, you've got people actually looking for YOU - not accidentally seeing you and then moving on. I understand you'd want your friends to see you - and if you have many, it's just easier to post your picture on the net. However, an unintended effect is being seen by creeps. I mean, unless you're into that sort of thing, then I don't know what to tell you. Have, eh... fun.

Into it?  You don't seem to to be able to grasp that some of us just don't care.  There are some things I'm paranoid about.  How some unknown person reacts to a photographic representation of me isn't one of them.

This seems to be a real concern of yours.  I hope for your sake that you never accomplish anything or get recognized for any achievement in a newspaper article, newsletter, company monthly, yearbook, alumni magazine, annual review, club circular . . .

Have, eh... fun yourself.

On a side note, it would be really neat if we could post our pictures without fear. It would be really nice if we could use the internet technology to be more real than words to everyone. I could talk to some Italian guy on webcam. Or some North Korean guy, Brazilian guy, etc. That would be neat...Smile
