Why do we have to type in a code before sending somebody a message?

What is the point?

Captcha is used when the site is experiencing a lot of spam.

When the Captcha's are active, I just refuse to send any PMs. :-)

These captchas are too difficult on my poor eyes; please just give me the traffic lights.

Captcha's are inaccessible by nature. They immediately disqualify anyone with any sort of impairment. If there were apps out there that could translate the captcha's for the impaired, then they could do the same for bots. People with impairments should be able to register themselves as so, so they don't have to feel disheartened every time they want to send a simple DM.

Completely ridiculous and people are bound to leave because of it, especially as 2/3 of the codes are illegible.

It's disgusting and completely discriminatory.

They need to ask themselves some serious questions.

Captcha is used when the site is experiencing a lot of spam.

why cant you just ban the spam

It's impossible to ban it before it's posted. During a spam attack, the spammers are using multiple accounts to generate a lot of spam. The system activates the CAPTCHA to slow attacks down and allow accounts to be handled.

Ask the spammers....

Depends on the content, but it's usually trying to drive traffic to sites and subsequently trying to monetize the traffic in some manner.
