Why is custom position so broken?

Seriously - cant figure out how to use this without there basically being a 50/50 chance of being the wrong color. Human always moves first from the custom position, but the color is randomized, so if you flip the board the move order changes.
If you go back, the position you spent 5 minutes setting up is cleared. Why?
