Why is there a women's chess league?

In a game of wits, where men and women are equal, why is it that there is a separate league for women? Isn't this demeaning?

I suppose so, although if a female chooses not to compete female-only, she has the choice.

I think it makes sense because women and men think in different ways so a woman is not going to compete the same way as a man usually. Maybe? So the scoring would be inaccurate.
