You don't really need to be perfect at it just fast enough so its not drawn by 50 move rule

If 50 moves (both sides have to play 50 moves) pass without a single capture or pawn push, then a draw can be claimed

Two bishops is easy. Bishop + Knight is a lot harder, but I can do it because I spent a lot of time learning it.

Lbjon
II should be able to do it but I can’t, if I were playing for a living... I would learn it by heart. As it is in my reality, I probably would stalemate with the bishop pair and if it’s the knight and bishop... I would admit that I don’t know the mate in 25 or whatever it is and offer a draw... If I had the two knights, I would try.... there must be a secret way to do it, and science missed something! I just know it!! Lol I don’t know if it’s an automatic draw though...
Mako_Cat

it’s a complete draw. Try and play a two knight checkmate backwards. It’s impossible without stalemate.

Lbjon
Mate is possible if you and opponent both have a single minor piece... It’s hard enough to find the positions, but they exist.. but that’s a draw

Lbjon
I know but it’s physically possible... not enforceable... but is it a automatic draw? Or can you play on for 50 moves?
blueemu

Assume that your opponent's time runs out just as you reach a K+N+N vs K ending. Under FIDE rules it's a win. Under USCF rules, it's a draw.

Not sure if it's an automatic draw, though.

Mako_Cat

But that was help checkmate blueemu. If black had played 11... Kf8 instead of Kh8 it would be a draw

Only under USCF rules. Under FIDE rules, it's a win if any legal sequence of moves will result in a checkmate.

*sigh*

Yes, this is the difference between USCF and FIDE rules.

FIDE only requires that a mate be POSSIBLE.

USCF requires that it be FORCED.

Mako_Cat

Right. I remember this discussion but forgot the answer. If white has K + N + N vs. K and black runs out of time, does white win. I think in FIDE, white wins but USCF its a draw

Correct.

Anybody remember that game a few months ago ,fujzura (however you spell that) vs. carlsen where fujzura ran out of time in the endgame, in a clearly drawn position, but he lost on time so he appealed and lost

blueemu

The one I remember is the Women's World Champion failing to mate with B+N...

iballisticsquid123

yeah it was firouzja three pawns and a bishop and carlsen a lone bishop. firouzja would have to promte to a minor piece fo a mate to be possible but rules are rules

Aeraaa

I can mate with 2 bishops (although it is harder in a blitz/bullet game). I don't think I can do the same with bishop and a knight.

(in a live game at least, in a daily game I'm sure I can be successful in both types of mate).

KidOfScotch

i can do it with like 2 hints

KidOfScotch

i dont think most people can do knight and bishop
