Endgame study for Pion15
I have been busy for so long calculating the wrong line, I couldn't see it anymore. Do you have more puzzles with the same struggle?
3. Nc7 Nf6 4. Nd5+ White wins. It's surprising how easy the win is once White gets the first two moves right. In hindsight, it's clear that a2 is the only square the white king can get to in two moves where the black knight doesn't have a one-move or two-move check.
Before looking at another study, there's a task I posted in one of the Daily Puzzle threads and was surprised no one did anything with it. Maybe you want to give it a try. The task is to construct a position, White to play, where a forced mate in 2 or 4 moves is simple, and mate in 3 is impossible.
This is not the task yet. But a nice one maybe. White wins easily, but how does it win by mate in two? White begins.
I actually think this one is perfect for the task. (but i did not make this one myself) I can make a mate in four as well as in two. I think a mate in three is not possible.
Oh, i did not look for mate in three real close. Does not matter if black plays 1. ... fxe3, f3 or d4, it all ends up mate in 3, so no good for the assignment. Have you seen the mate in two as well?
I could also argue that your position misses due to the mate in 2 not being simple (after Kg7 there are nine moves for Black and you have to find a mating move for each of them).
Indeed it is not a simple puzzle. But finding Kg7 is key behind this one. After each move black plays there is a move for white to mate. (took me a while to figure this one out, i think it is a very nice puzzle)
In the next puzzle i made myself i hope to have finished your task ; )
It has a mate in two and a mate in four, i have not a mate in three so far...
I think I will have one more try with 1. Ka3 Kc6 2. Ka2
