This is so cool. FICS used to have this in tournament form.
Together with a friend, we learned how to perfectly play this. If I recall correctly, white has two winning (king) moves. The often played 1. a4 leads to a draw.
Later, I also wrote a computer program that fully solved this initial position, and proved what we already knew.
We won about all of the FICS tournaments we joined, regardless of whether we played white or black.
