Shouldn't stalemates count as winning?

If there is a stalemate, then the enemy King can't move anywhere so shouldn't that be a win instead of a draw?

This question was decided in the 19th century. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalemate

You can think of it as a win if you want to.

It "should" be what the rules say it is. If you want to, you can petition FIDE to change the rules.

If stalemate were a win, there would be a large issue in the fact that king + pawn vs king would always result in a win, as well as many other instances. Stalemate is an effective tool used to hold out in the endgame, and if your proposal was the case, a very slight advantage would always result in a theoretically won position which becomes quite problematic and would in fact make the endgame far too easy... At grandmaster level, white would win a far more overwhelming majority of times over black than what currently already seems to be at a 1.75:1 ratio as white to black statistically speaking.

And if this has to do with instances where kids make a blunder up by a queen or something, that's on them because they should know better on how to win the game.

You have to think of this issue in terms of how it would effect gameplay, not how it seems conceptually at surface level.

So far, that's the best answer.

Stalemate should not be a win. Stalemate should be a beer. That way, you may not have won, but at least you have beer.

Stalemate should be a loss for the player who gets stalemated... and a double or triple loss for the one giving stalemate. Laughing

It's not a win, but I think of it as a win if I stalemate a higher rated player while playing black. I also think of it as a win if I was in a losing position to begin with . . .
