I would personally answer “none” if I can...

But you can't (#3071 in Daily Puzzle Submissions! *Be Involved*)

After Trexlers #8:

Add 6 white pieces (no pawns) such that black is not stalemated but can still draw! In a legal position of course. I know one solution but there may be more, so it is kind of a challenge.

Edit 24/4/2019: changed wK position from f1 to f2; same solution but the draw is a little more precise

6 dark square bishops, right?

n9531l1

Against six dark square bishops Black can capture the c-pawn, but what will stop White from winning by promoting the a-pawn?

That is the correct question!

Galaxy_Chess_God

king + pawn vs king

How can White move the a-pawn

334 is a drawn position

Trexler, what problem is that supposed to solve? It couldn't be #329. Those six white pieces you added look too black for it to be that one.

Below the solution diagram to adding 6 white pieces in puzzle form. The key points are (1) making sure that Ba7 cannot make way for the a-pawn to promote (2) setting up stalemate defenses when the wK moves in too close (3) prevent the wK from reaching c7/c8 before the bK is on a8.

The next step is to figure out how White wins if any bishop is removed.

Arisktotle

Yep. Not all that hard if you take into account the key points in my post.

By the way, another interesting challenge is to add other white units than only black squared bishops and achieve the same result. How many do you need? Can it be done without adding pawns?

edited 26/4/2019: So here is the generalized challenge:

Legally add a black King + 5 standard white pieces from the box (no pawns, no same colored bishops, max 2 knights, max 2 rooks, max 1 queen) to a diagram with only white Kd7, such that: black on move captures a piece and draws

As in judo, turn your opponents force against him. That is one of my favorite endgame themes.
