When Checkmate is imminent...

Endgames are one of three most important events in a single chess match, and executing the right moves is of upmost importance. Although, when your down in material and your opponent is one move away from delivering a mate, you feel hopeless and is in need of a miracle. Luckily, there is a very insignificant glimmer of hope in these types of situations. Take this position for example, played by two high school varsity chess players (first chair):

In this situation, black has cut off both the c-file, and the b2-h2 horizontal. Obviously, there is no escape for white's king. Or is there? The next set of moves, in fact, did actually happen (rather funny). Take these next positions:
As you can see, the rook taking the worthless pawn posed as a "threat" to black, thus taking it and leaving the king open to ruthless attacks, which ended in checkmate. That one rook move by white stalled black from delivering checkmate, but rather turned the tide around. Afterwards (I observed this live), black, who was panicking a the time, had no idea what to do and just randomly moved king to a suicidal position. Furthermore, black had many chances to block the ruthless checks, but just didn't take them (which outstounded me...). The "theory" (or whatever you want to call it) here is that when checkmate is imminent, just start throwing pieces and taking pieces; let him make a mistake (if he is gullible to do it). It is to your benifit if he falls for it, and if your extra pieces are in the right postitions. Note: this "theory" is not fail-proof, and is not intended to contradict any other pieces of information. This is provided for your benefit, in fact an idea, in these kinds of situations (or for your entertainment).

I stopped at Qe8+ and was trying to find a perpetual or something (thought it would end in a draw).  I'm sure black was as surprised as I was when it was suddenly mate!  Of course 3. or 4. Ka7 and there are no more checks... what's the saying?  There's never a position so won that it wins itself! Laughing
