[1400 elo] What should I study? Chess partner

Hi, I'm 1400 in rapid right now. I only know basic openings and do puzzles most of the time other than games. What should I study to improve myself? Does anyone want to learn chess together?

Andrew_Tim

I'm 1400 as well.

Endgames. I wish I was good at endgames. Often, the engine tells me after the game that I have played really well throughout most of the game and then if my opponent has the sense to simplify the position down to an endgame, It tells me that I have made very questionable decisions.

I'm also particularly weak when it comes to defending against passed pawns.

I've been meaning to study the games of Jose Raul Capablanca for ages now but I never get around to doing it. It might not mean much coming from me but I think attempting to understand his endgame capabilities would be a significant advancement.

Good luck. happy.png

Hi there!

Always up for practice games, game analysis, and studying other chess concepts. You can message me if you want to set something up sometime. I believe in routine study for best improvement results, so doing chess activities daily, even small things, adds up over time. If you’re solving puzzles daily, then make sure you play a game and analyze it daily to, categorizing your mistakes so over time you can see trends and focus on those areas, and if you’ve got extra try reading a book on something you know is a weakness of yours or you don’t know to begin with. An example, an endgame book. I also highly recommend routinely reviewing master games of the openings you play so you pick up the ideas and concepts of how those openings are played out as well as typical middle game plans and pawn structures. Make sure to keep it fun though!

I’m in the same boat and working towards 1500.

We can always play unrated rapid games. It’s important to practice with comparable and stronger players. I’m fortunate to have play partners as strong as 2100 OTB.

What I am currently working on are tactics, middle game planning and strategy. Be sure to analyze each games after wards.

puzzles are great for your tactics...

suggest the lessons here for learning strategy;

endgames are very important to study as well.

@NatalieKok DM me and be my chess buddy here at chess dot com.

I looked at a couple of your games and it seems like you miss quite a few tactics, which doesn't make sense seeing your high puzzle rush score.

HopsnLops

another struggling 1400 who just barely scraped past 1500. I have the same question. What I realized is that  a lot of 1400s games that resulted in a loss comes from  hanging pieces. So I try to do less of that. Learning endgame can be very helpful as well. I'm down for a chess partner if anyone is interested.

@Wasp_dalek I lost quite a few times because of bad endgame play too! Jose Raul Capablanca? Is there a place to study that?

@jg777chess Ok, I'll dm you. Those are good advice, categorizing my mistakes sounds like a good idea, I can try that! I have always wanted to read from books, but idk which books are good for me right now. Do you have suggestions?

@technical_knockout Lessons here? Which ones should I pick to learn strategy?

@ronaldotrump1 Yeah, I really need to make a habit of calculating properly at crucial positions sad.png It's really hard to figure out if there is a tactic in actual games because most of the times there might not be any at all.

@HopsnLops I'm guilty of hanging pieces in stupid ways too xP Ok, I'm down for it.

technical_knockout

On this website: Click 'more', then 'master games' and a lot of Jose Raul Capablanca's games are available to view.

One of the reasons for studying his games is because he had a reputation for being an endgame master.

check bobby fischer's too.  🙂

Yeah, and that's why you always look for them. And you will just naturally do it if you practice enough. Just like how you immediately see a hanging queen,  you aren't specifically looking for 1 move blunders, but it's in your muscle memory

Play slower games, practice calculation. Brush up on your opening theory of your most common openings.

And play. A lot. Study is important but there is not better teacher than playing a game and analyzing yourself through that game, win/loss/draw.
