A good opening for black against d4
I now hover between 1200 and 1400 chess.com, stuck there for about a year now.
I have been trying to improve by learning some openings:
As white, London System
As black against e4, Caro-Kann Defense (c6)
As black against d4, Modern Defense (g6)
BUT,
I don’t like the modern defense. I wish there was another opening that is beginner-friendly that I can learn as black against d4.
Problem with d5 is it opens the door for white to play a million different openings, and opponents will each play something different. I don’t want to prepare against 10 openings.
What’s a good opening to learn instead of the modern defense?
I have been using the Englund Gambit as a band-aid solution for tactics, anti-London and scoring well in the last year.
I play the Modern-Pterodactyl sideline but hypermodern defences are not for beginners especially when you purposely give white a big centre or when you have transpositions into the KID, Benoni and Dragon positions; what to do?
Have you tried the Semi-Slav? That’s what I started with as a beginner and it served me well.
I think the semi-Slav serves well from the beginner to the titled level if anybody wishes to chime in?

Yes, 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 is most like 1 d4 d5 2 Bf4 and 1 e4 c6 2 c4 d5:
The same pawn chain b7-c6-d5 (b2-c3-d4).
So experience with one benefits the other.
What about Kings Indian Defense? It's a tough opening with many variations but definitely a fun, alternatively Grundfeld.
I'm the SA of the d4 club and my favorite response when playing against d4 opening is the Nimzo-Indian it takes some practice and studying the theories in the opening. I have won more games against d4 with the Indian openings the Nimzo being my favorite. Cheers all
d4 c5 0-1
I agree with this. One must espect the genius of Alfred Benoni, pioneer of the Benoni Defense (and Old Benoni for the crackheads like me). Here is one glorious variation, which has been played by various senile and frail old men over the decades.

Personal!y I wouldn't play Bg4 - it supports the f5 break later.
