a question regarding ratings

i started playing daily chess games recently and for some reason winning gives me a few rating points yet losing is straight up double figures.. like 40 points sometimes..

is there a reason for this that I'm missing?

shouldn't it be somewhat balanced both ways?

Probably because the opponent's rating was way less than you

You lose more points if u lose against a low rated player and don't get a lot of points if u win.

Otherwise it's pretty balanced....

Also if you just started the variations among your games will be a lot. After like 100 games it will decrease to reasonable amounts

When you start a new variant, which you have never played before, then your rating will drop and increase in 3 figures, until it finds your rating in which you are winning and losing so that you find your equal in the matches.

i see..

well the ratings were similar to mine when i started the games..

I probably shouldn't accept any more rematch requests from them

When I play my daily games I get minuses in my ratings when I lose but when I win I don’t get any points??

Which is really annoying

When just starting, rating gains and losses can be erratic because you don't have enough games for the system to make valid judgments. As you play more games and build up a statistically better ratings base, the movements should become less erratic.

And as mentioned above, the rating of you opponent has a bearing on how much your rating may shift. Your rating should improve when you defeat opponents at, or above, your level. You won't see much of an increase when wining against lower rated players. Conversely, losing to a lower rated opponent will cost you more than losing to a higher rated player.

This can only happen if you play unrated games or rated games against much weaker opponents.
