abandoning games

There’s a lack of sportsmanship among online players. I’ve noticed whenever I take a big lead rather than resigning most often players make you wait for the game to be abandoned it’s annoying, is this a tantrum or is there a benefit over resigning?

No benefit whatsoever.  Unfortunately there is a lot of childish behavior here.  I think if you abandon too often you get placed in a special pool for bad sports, but I'm not 100% sure.

That's life in the big city......I once belonged to a chess club and played one of the best players in the club (expert level) in five minute blltz game. Well, I got lucky and was ahead in material but lost on time. The expert immediately got up and left the table as soon as I timed out. I was analyzing the game with a couple of friends and they showed me how I could have won the game. That's the expert came back over, placed his arm on the table and swept all the pieces onto the floor and stormed away. It happens.
