Anyone Else Beat The 1K Computer But Not Real Players?

Just a random question, but i can beat the 1k computer but seemingly lose all my other matches against real people.

This sound normal?  I am new to chess and just starting to learn etc.

Anyone else get this?

Yeah, playing against an engine is not really a good practice for real games.

I had this yesterday. I’m new to chess too. I worked my way through all the beginner bots and on to the intermediate bots. Winning all and one draw. So decided to start playing real games and lost about 7 in a row to lower ratings than the bots. In fairness I was blundering all over the place. 10 min games put me under pressure to move quicker than bot games.

Don't play speed chess, it is very tough to improve that way. Better to play one longer game than bunch of shorter ones.

If you want to improve, here are the tips I can offer:

Thank you. I’ll probably try 30 or 60 min games.

You're welcome. It will be more enjoyable than just blundering left and right (it will still happen for quite some time but in lesser amount) because time will run out otherwise.

I have been playing a "1 Day Move" game and i am so much stronger on this.  The short 10 min games are killing me lol.

Yeah that is daily chess, useful, but it is a lot easier than playing live chess. You will not get better at visualization because you can actually move the pieces in analysis board, and the fact that you are allowed to use opening explorers and databases without an engine.

It is still better than playing speed chess.

Ahh i see.  I dont actually do any of that analysis stuff lol.

Should probably buy a chess board at some point!

So what’s the best game to play to learn?
nklristic

I play 1 hour per side. 30 minutes per side is still ok, I play that sometimes. At the very minimum 15 minutes with increment per move (10 seconds increment is the standard), but that is inferior to 1 hour per side game because at that time control you need some experience not to mess up due to time trouble (if you want to find the best possible move you can, which should be your goal because that way you will improve).

Ok. Thank you very much 👍🏻

on chess.com the best time control for “long games” is 30 min

anything longer has to be a custom game and you will never get any takers

play a 30 min game and spend an hour going over it afterwards

work on tactics puzzles and endgame techniques as well

nklristic

That is not correct. There is 1 hour per side game option (there is 45|45 option as well), it is not custom and on lower levels there are enough players who plays it. On my level and higher there are less players who plays 1 hour per side games, but I can still get a game.

Here is proof (new Play option that was in beta recently):

Old option (Live chess):

As you can see, 60 minutes is not custom time control.

they must have added this then (i havent played a rapid game here for months)

good to know

They have this at least from February when I joined up. There are times when I have to wait 2-3 minutes for a game but that is tolerable. I presume on higher levels it is much harder to find a game though.
