hi new!!
Are any other newbies here absolutely petrified of playing against real people?

Im the same way. Now I will play daily games against real people because of my work/life schedule, but haven't done any real time. I'm available for daily if interested in trying.

Some people have class and some never will. Its just like real society. Unfortunately they let the childish people buy subscriptions too. I was working my way up the bot ladder and all of the sudden the bot's skill increased 500% so I got stuck and started playing real people. I would just as soon play the computer but the computer doesnt play like a real person no matter what skill. Ive yet to play a human who moves the same piece back and forth 4 times and lets me get all of my moves lined out.
I guess I'm in the chicken club too=)
I have really bad anxiety over everything, real and online.
I Joined in November, and played against the bots. I've even won a few=) Today I have taken up the free trial membership and bought a gold account, in the hope that now I have some of my cash invested I'll be able to force myself to take on real folks, risking the mighty 400 ELO I have been given. Probably not today, but "soon" I'm sure.
Oh, and from what I've read on the forum so far, I feel duty bound to ask.... I'm 62, with almost no chess experience since I played a very few games at school over 55 years ago... How long can I expect to wait until I'm a GM?=)
But seriously, good luck folks, lets try to remember we are here to have fun and play a few games of chess.

Hello,
So I have been playing for about 2 months now, and I'm appalled by what's happening to my game. Every day I do the Puzzles, I play at least 2 games against a bot that is slightly higher ranked than me, I watch online tutorial videos. In short I do everything I think I should do in order to prepare myself to play, and tonight I have been smashed, absolutely smashed 5 games in a row. And when I look back at the games I'm horrified by the simple, and stupid errors that I have been making. I had worked hard to get my rating up to about 830 (still pathetic, but it was going up) and I have lost about 100 points tonight along with all of my confidence.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Same goes for me. I was very nervous when I first started playing against other people. I have no issue with saying great move or great game. Very laid back, and only looking to enjoy the game as much as possible. Feel free to send me an invitation, I'm happy to play anyone now.

Take your time. It's my opinion that once you get to 800 or so, you have to look more than one move ahead. when you come up with a "candidate" move play the move in your head firdt and then put yourself in your opponent's place and try to punish that move. If you can't see a way to punish it then probably it's an OK move.

I think you can will GM to next of kin...?
I never played against real people. Ever. Even when it was an option. They were horrible, even when I was young.
Until here, when I finally plucked up the courage.
Guess what? It’s fine, even if you’re a beginner like me. Turn the chat function off, enjoy games with folk who are close to your level, and learn a few lessons. In my experience, when you’ve had a good close game, the random person you’ve just played will sign you up as a friend, and ask for rematch.
Example: I played a good beginning, just to get slammed at the endgame, so I congratulated the player by msg. Got a challenge from them sometime later, played, and beat them right back. We know nothing about each other, but we’re ‘friends’ here. So real players aren’t all bad!
Don’t be frightened, and if anyone gives you a hard time, ignore them. Besides, there’s nothing that beats the feeling you get from checkmating fools with bizarre aggressive handles like ‘ifyouloseyousuck’.
Try it. It’s a good hobby, and you barely need to break a sweat.
Good luck to you 😊
