What is the most popular defences for Black for a beginner player?

e5, scandi, caro kann, french

As a beginner you should play e5. If you are desperate to learn theory, here is my recent lichess study https://lichess.org/study/WroaOCrl with as little theory as possible(for beginners)

scandi is also a very solid option, but you need to know what to do if they decline it.

Caro-kann is op but a little bit slow and hard for a beginner

french is faster, easier, but you will most likely get only the boring exchange variation

The Englund gambit Vs D4 has yielded good results for me :)

I used to play the Slav Defence, I don't play it as often as the variations are a bit strange.
