I've been playing for a couple months, and everyone says it's a cakewalk to get to 500 elo. They say you don't really have to study openings and just play scholars mate. For me, when I hit 150 scholars stopped working. Once i hit 300 the opponents were doing stuff a 1500 would do. I win about 1/8 of my games and my rating keeps going down, am I doing something or am I just mentally ill?
