Can someone please explain the rating's numbers ?

I don't understand what do the numbers we get for playing mean.

I would appreciate it if someone could explain the language please.

I'm probably not the best person to explain it, but the number is called an ELO rating. You were given a rating when you began and matched with other players who also have a rating.

If you win, you gain rating points and if you lose you lose rating points. The amount of points you gain or lose is not the same every game, it depends on the rating of your opponent.

If your opponent has a higher rating than you and you win, you gain more points than you would if your opponent had a lower rating than you.

If your opponent has a higher rating than you and you lose, you lose fewer points that you would if your opponent has a lower rating than you.

There is a wikipedia page about ELO ratings, and you could also prompt a LLM such as ChatGPT to explain the ELO rating system in chess so that a five year old could understand it. (Note: I'm not trying to insult you, that's just what I would do if I wanted a simple explanation for something).

Thank you so much for your answer.

I prefer talking to people and not talking to AI. I prefer learning from people and not from computers.

What is the lowest and what is the highest rate ?

Are there barriers in this game that when levelling up them, you cannot go down in your level ?

Avatar of MiAgMuNiKa

I don't think there is a highest or lowest. There aren't really any barriers except for your skill level compared to other people.

thanks

the lowest possible rating you can go is 100, and the highest blitz rating is currently GM Hikaru Nakamura at 3400 exactly. There are also different ratings for each different time format- rapid, blitz, bullet and daily. there is also a puzzle rating, a rating for each varient and a puzzle battle rating. you also have different over the board ratings such as FIDE,ECF and USCF, as well as more for other federations. and finally you have your ratings on other sites such as lichess, chess24 and FIDE online arena. Hope that helped, and dont worry if its a bit confusing at first, you will soon fell comfortable with the system. DM me if you have any more questions

The math works out so that if your opponent is rated 400 elo higher than you, you will only win 10% of the time. For every 400 points beyond that, the decimal place moves by one. If someone is 800 elo higher you are likely to win only 1% of the time. And the reverse is true if you are higher rated than your opponent. And if someone is roughly the same elo as you, statistically you both should have a 50/50 chance at winning.

This is a very over simplified description of it. You can read about it in depth on wikipedia. I wouldn't ask chatgpt about it - I asked it to make me an elo graph a month or two ago and at first glance it looks correct but you look closer and it's complete nonsense.

this makes a lot of sense, although at maybe 1800 average across all ratings i would expect to crush all (non-cheating) 1000's virtually every single game. 🥷

I lost a game to somebody rated more than 900 points below me, and I didn't suspect him of cheating. If you play enough games, those 1% chances will eventually crop up.

As a general rule... when I lose a chess game it's because I played like a chimpanzee, not because somebody cheated.

A rating difference of 200 points indicates a 75%-25% split in results.

i think the skill gap between players rated 900 points below you & 900 points below me is more substantial than you may have considered. 😸

More number = good

Less number = bad

Lowest number = 100

Highest number = Infinity, but about 3400

also search it up lol

i would add to the conversation that the time control should factor heavily into the equation here -- i'd probably expect to lose some bullet or blitz games eventually versus sub-1000 players, but as for daily:

this is a pretty typical game for an 800-point elo gap at my low level... in my defence, i was playing 20 random 960 games at once for the 'juggler' achievement & not just picking on people half my size. 😺

Avatar of Helenaplei

what are the type of games ? what are blitz ,bullet etc ?

Avatar of chekagain

bullet is 2 minute, 1 minute 30 second and below.Blitz is 3 or 5 minute, and rapid is 10 minute, 15 minute and 20 minute.

Avatar of Helenaplei

thanks. 2 minutes for the whole game ??

@chekagain 2 minutes with a 1 second increment is also classified as bullet.
