Can't checkmate

Hi. I just started playing chess two days ago. I had one online match and a couple of matches with the computer. Each time I captured all of their pieces. And each time I could not checkmate the king and I ended up repeating moves and the match ended in a draw. What should I do?

I did. But the part where they told you about checkmate, I could not understand properly and I could not repeat that part.

Learn checkmate patterns. For example:

Basic 2 rook mate (works just as well with a queen and a rook or 2 queens)

Wow. Thanks. I am going to try that right now.

it's impossible to C-mate in less than 20 moves unless your opponent screws up.

What you should learn is how to punish screw-ups

checkmate is when the opponent's king is in check and CANNOT MOVE because every square he COULD move to would ALSO BE CHECK.

Black is in checkmate here (notice how the bishop protects the queen):

Black is NOT in checkmate here:

Wow. Two days into the game and you are already looking at checkmates. It's tough to observe checkmate patterns that soon. Here is one useful idea which is relatively easy to execute at all levels of play.

Here's a king and queen vs king example:

Here on the site go to Puzzles > Drills. There you will find checkmate drills galore. Start with the king and queen, then king and two rooks, and then king with one rook. Go over and over them until they begin to make sense, and then go over them until you can do them in your sleep. There are lots of other checkmate types, as you will see, but after only two days of playing chess, those are all you want for the moment.
