But is it though?

so you suggest capturing the king instead of checkmate? it would be about the same. the king would just move once in a position that is checkmate, and then be captured.

It’s annoying, yes, but if you are giving the check it isn’t stupid, because you’ll most likely win a tempo

rip stalemate

Learn to play Shogi then. No such thing as check there. I can promise, though, watching your king fly off the board without warning is way more painful than a checkmate.

the only thing this would change is stalemate wouldn't exist. nothing else would happen.

I meant higher level chess. I am sure new players would blunder their kings. hopefully not including me, but I probably would occasionally.

I easily forget to say check during real games.

I don't think real players say "check". They also don't tip their kings over when resigning. They just offer a handshake. I only know this from movies. I'm still at the level where we say "check".

If you don't say check, how would you know if you're in check? Sometimes I'm just too into the game and I stop paying attention about my game and if it's in check or not.

you know you are in check by looking to see if your king is in danger.

Too into the game to know if you're in check? I'm going to have to think about that one.
