Whats the best opening?
No one knows.
It is no different vs. other Hypermodern Opening.
The difference is that you waste time by playing a4 and h4, which do nothing, except weaken your own position. Your opponent has complete center control and a lead in development, and you have no compensation for either. You've even preemptively weakened your king's position no matter which side you'll castle.
The "Crab opening" is not simply bad. It's Bongcloud level of bad. Throwing away 2 tempo for nothing and losing king safety, for exactly no benefit.

A4 & H4 create an outpost for a Knight on B5 & G5.
If you actually looked at the games, I have posted on this thread.
You would have realized the majority of my opponents are responding to A4 & H4 with moves like A6 & H6.
They don’t want a Knight to land on B5 or G5.
The weaknesses White is creating is being matched by the weaknesses Black is creating.

Hypermodern lines allow the enemy to get occupation of the center.
Than they counter attack.
This has always been the case.
I want to take a min to show beginners something very important.
The above position is what I am calling the starting position of the Crab.
Now watch the following:
Game 1 - Post #2
Game 2 - Post #25
Game 3 - Post #25
Game 4 - Post #25
Game 5 - Post #26
If you Look at the 1st - 6 moves from all the above games I played, you will see the above positions. Do you see a theme for white?
——————-
I have transformed the Crab Opening into a System opening which can be played against pretty much anything Black plays.
Look at how powerful that can be for a beginner!
- Beginners are not very good in opening theory.
- Sometimes, Beginners watch chess opening videos and their opponents don’t play the same moves in the video and they get upset or frustrated.
When you know the Crab formation, you don’t have to worry as much what your opponents are doing because at least you get into a familiar position which you can be comfortable in.
This is confidence in a chess diagram!
For fun, I've just checked what my Stockfish thinks about the Crab Opening. Is it better and worse than the Bongcloud?
For the Bongcloud starting position, 1. e4 35 2. Ke2, after some thinking the engine says -2.0.
The Crab starting position, 1. a5 e5 2. h4 d5 3. b3 Nc6 4. g3 at the same depth the engine says -2.3.
I thought it's impossible to create an opening that's worse than the Bongcloud. I was wrong. Amazing.

Your computer engine is clearly broken.
I just recently showed a game played by a person who was mostly likely using a computer engine which is why he was ban for breach of service.
After move 6...Qd6, the computer engine was reading the line as -0.97 which is less vs. the -2.3 your saying.
The Alien Gambit also gets -2 from Stockfish; but its a very dangerous opening that you have to handle carefully.
The crab opening gives up all control of the center, thus its not surprising to me that Stockfish isnt liking it.
@Post #38
Very True, Maria.
A lot of engines don’t like openings which give up space.
Crab can be vicious for sure.
CRAB OPENING STARTING POSITION:
I showed everyone how we can reach the above position no matter what Black plays.
I will now show you how to play Middle Game!
MIDDLE GAME PLANS FOR CRAB OPENING:
We have 2 different Middle Game plans in the Crab Opening.
———————
Plan One: We will try to capture our opponents Bishop!
Notice the Green Highlights + Green Circles + Red Circles!
Players love to put Bishops on d6 or e6.
We plan to do a sneaky Knight move to go after a Bishop!
We can move our Knight to a3 - Than try to jump into b5 or c4
We can move our Knight to h3 - Than try to jump into g5 or f4
This is our clever plan to win Bishop Pair!
The only thing to be careful about is our opponent pawns!
Don’t let them take your knight with a pawn.
——————————-
Plan Two: We will counter attack our opponent center pawns with our pawns!
Notice the Blue Highlights + Yellow Circles
Our opponents might try to run away with their Bishop or they might put Bishop on different square which we can’t attack.
If the above happens, we will develop the Knight normally to c3 or f3.
Than try to attack center with Pawn Push.
————————
This is our 2 step plan for Middle Game domination!
The crab could be legit in bullet, but definitely not rapid
Look at some of my games...
we are talking about beginners.
It is a viable line for them.
Every opening is viable for everyone. That's not a real hurdle.
On the other hand, teaching nonsense to beginners is very bad. Beginners know nothing of chess, so they may easily believe you. If you can't help, at least you should try to do no harm.
I think we have different view points on how to teach beginners.
I think the line I am showing would be from the hyper modern school of learning.
The hypermodern approach involves central control based on pieces rather than pawns, and to make it work rapid piece development is required.
Playing time-wasting nonsense like a2-a4 and h2-h4 is a byproduct of the meta-patzer chess school, and to no other chess trend.
magipi is right reporting that 1.a4 d5 2.h4 e5 3.b3 Nc6 4.g3 is around -2.0 according to an engine. Don't blame it to his broken engine, but rather to your broken brains.
