I think you're playing a lot when you're tired and nervous.

Yeah, I typically don’t like it when my rating suddenly jumps.

When that happens, I get nervous about my rating and overthink things. Perhaps that helps but I hate playing Chess that way.

My solution: play a few games like a goddamn maniac. Play games when I’m tired but still want fun. I’ll bottom out and my new bottom is higher than my old bottom.

My bottom was 429 before, now 550.

@feranard - mhm - well except that my "bottom out" is lower than it ever was, now happy.png.

@RussBell - thank you - I love that; though, sort of as feedback, on first glance that first link is too overwhelming, really. I found some of that - and my recent peaks are down to that, too. Except that - it's like all that worked "betterish" for a good few moments now doesn't happy.png

What I can see is that you play too fast. You don't think on your moves even in complicated positions, you just make a semi-random move based on gut feeling.

There are a few weird moves (like 5. d4 or 9. Ke1), but the weirdest one is move 18. Instead of taking the queen, you decided instead to lose a piece (and a rook), then the next move you throw another piece into the bin, then the queen. All these moves are made in a few seconds with still a ton of time on your clock. When the game ends (29 moves!) you still have 7:22 remaining of your 10 minutes.

What you should do is this: Slow down. Use your time and think. Don't play random moves, try to find good moves.

1. Don't hang pieces.

2. Control the centre.

3. Take free pieces.

4. No gambits/sacrifices (unless it's really simple standard mating patterns).

5. Protect your king (castle, give him an escape square).

6. Take towards the centre.

7. Play until you lose, I've won several times after hanging my queen and then regaining composure.

8. Get your king out in the end game and start hoovering up pawns.

I've been following these (see here: https://www.chessjournal.com/chessbrah-habits/#0-700_ELO_Habits) and I've got from 196 to just under 650 elo over the past few months.

I can teach you EXACTLY how to think during the game (opening, middlegame and endgame). Your chess understanding will never be the same and you will improve a lot. I charge $10/h, but if you can’t afford too many lessons, don’t worry. I can teach you a lot in an hour. Here to help if you are interested.

If you want to study by yourself, read ‘Logical Chess’. It is really instructive book. You have it on youtube as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eTB7oHeRgM&list=PLUrgfsyInqNa1S4i8DsGJwzx1Uhn2AqlT
