The 2500+ rating and GM-norms is the common way to become a GM, but it is not the only way. For instance, 2300+ and winning the Winning the World Junior Championship (U20) gives you the GM title, as does 2300+ rating and Reaching the final 16 in the FIDE World Cup. There's other ways too.
