Hey there,
Could someone please tell me why my opponent resigned? It seemed like he was beating me for the better part of the game; I was kind of getting myself out of trouble every move. Was this going to be a draw? Maybe he just got bored? Lol, thanks!

I can't see the game, just a diagram of the starting position

Here’s the actual game, might help...

Well, this is the final position, anyway. I’m pasting the FEN in, I’m not sure why it isn’t working.

The FEN is always just the final position. You want the PGN instead.

I don’t feel dumb at all.

After 38. ... Rg3+ 39. Kh5 Rfg4 the threat of Nf4 mate forces White to give up a Rook for the Knight, after which Black is a whole Rook ahead.

Why did Black resign when he had a forced win?

A couple of possibilities:

1) Maybe the baby woke up. People have real-life concerns that can force them to quit a game on short notice.

2) Maybe he was sandbagging... intentionally losing in order to keep his rating low, so that he can enter (and win) a rating-restricted tournament later on.

It was a 24 hour game so I don’t know...do people sandbag daily chess?

Am I the only person to consider that he had something else to do?

Read my post (possibility #1)

Just saw that (deleted the message), also I’m not sure that a 900 rated player would spot that forced mate, maybe he thought that white was going to promote?

That's wierd

I closed my first account on chess.com after being accused of sandbagging. Truth was I’d only played against bots for ages and on my first game against a human my rating was 1300, even though in reality I was more like a 250. After losing literally every single game and getting really down on myself, I decided to abandon a bunch of games to bring my rating down to where I belonged. I’m now rated about 450 and I win/lose equally.

judging on that final position, he had no reason to resign. maybe he got bored or something idk

They probably got busy, sometimes people can’t tell you that they have to leave if it urgent.

Thanks for the input, everyone. So yeah, as the game was a daily chess match with one day per move, if something came up he wouldn’t have to resign. That doesn’t mean it wasn’t the reason, though. But I do feel a little better being able to recognize he resigned in what was not a losing position. I’m not too old to learn chess! At least a little bit!
