Help in time management?

Hello! So I usually like to think a lot before making a move, but clearly that's not a good choice in blitz or bullet games. I always spend too much time calculating. Is there any tips for calculating quickly?

Do much tactics.

It would help if I had a premium account, but I don't. Thanks for the advice anyway, anything else?

Play slower time controls.

Learn and practice pattern recognition as much as you can. First, start it with memorizing checkmating pattern. Then, download chess puzzle apps from playstore. Watch the solutions of each puzzle. Then, repetitively  watch  the solutions over and over again. Once you get used to the,, you can recognize a combination immediately once you see it in a position of your games. Also, try watching chess games of old masters. Watching videos and analysis of other stronger players matches will help you in learning a lot of new patterns.

Do what I do.  Panic in fast time controls, and then think about your panic state instead of the position, and then put your brain and face in the "deer in the highlights" look, and get flagged.

Sigh.  Rinse.  And Repeat.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Here is an example of a game that I thought too long (blitz)

I did win on time but I completely blundered the advantage away calculating unnecessary lines.

Funnily enough I do the exact same thing in bullet. Once I blunder a pawn or a piece, I tend to blunder my queen shortly after, then begins the flagging. lol

But usually I flag my opponent until they run out of timewink.png.

Slow down, then build speed.

You shouldn't try to calculate a lot in blitz or bullet. It's more about the feel, and making practical decisions.

It can help to play when you're feeling full of energy. Put on some music you really like, that sort of thing. You have to be bold and willing to play moves that might be horrible blunders... it usually works out though because most moves in a game are not so critical that you lose instantly.

Accuracy is the enemy in blitz and bullet!

But yeah, like others said, to get better in speed games improve your game overall (slow games, study, that sort of thing), then after you've improved go back and work on speed.

You said you had a long think on move 12.

The key question is: what were you thinking about?

I'm not saying thinking there is wrong, but I am saying that if your thoughts are inefficient you're going to struggle more with time management. There's a difference between struggling to find candidates and struggling to calculate efficiently! You need to know which is your problem (or if the problem is something else) if you're going to improve

Always remember how you did your time management during school examinations and school tests. You don't spend a lot of time thinking on one question out of ten questions with equal marks and then get 'flagged on time', right?

1. What are you doing?

Taking too much time to calculate in blitz/bullet games.

How much time? Are you calculating accurately? What time is needed for you to calculate accurately?

2.Why are you doing it? Why bullet/blitz? Why not rapid/daily?

Slow down, to speed up. (Google it if you need to).

Get good at calculating accurately, then increase your speed calculating.

Googled Slow Down To Speed Up - thanks for that!

Also, have there been any good books written on this subject? I can't find anywhere. Looked on Amazon and it suggested this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cats-Space-Checkmate-Planner-Portable/dp/1791573827/ref=sr_1_10?keywords=Chess+Time+Management+Books&qid=1559218055&s=gateway&sr=8-10
